Days 4-7:
Gorilla & golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes
After a delightful breakfast, you will be transferred to Wilderness Sabyinyo, a classic and cosy community-inspired luxury lodge tucked away in the foothills of the Virunga range, just a short trek away from mountain gorilla territory. From here, you can trek on foot to see these magnificent creatures – perhaps one of the most profound wildlife experiences possible.
Your primary goal for visiting Volcanoes National Park is to have the rare opportunity to see a habituated gorilla family in their natural habitat. After finding them, enjoy every moment in their presence for one hour, as they go about their daily business—munching, grooming, and playing under the watchful eye of a silverback. Golden monkeys are also close by within the same forest, and you will enjoy every moment trekking these vibrant, endangered subspecies.
Beyond these highlights, you can also embark on guided nature and birding walks, take a clear view of the forest and enjoy its raw beauty, the dramatic landscapes, diverse tree species, birdlife and butterflies—everything reveals the beauty of one of Africa’s pristine habitats.
You can also take full-day hikes, including a challenging ascent of Mount Bisoke, trek to Dian Fossey’s grave at the Karisoke Research Centre, or explore the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, which showcases ongoing conservation efforts.
Other activities include visiting a community beehive project, participating in tree planting at the lodge nursery guided by an agronomist, or visiting the nursery school at Bisate Village to contribute to local education initiatives.
On the final day, you will be transferred to Kigali International Airport and escorted to a private lounge where you can relax and enjoy complimentary snacks and refreshments while awaiting your onward flight.
