About Kibale Forest National Park
Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda, approximately 348 kilometers west of Kampala and 26 kilometers south-east of Fort Portal town–Uganda’s tourism city. It spans over 766 Square Kilometres of total land area characterized by tropical rainforest on the Fort Portal plateau, and savannah in the Albertine Valley floor.
The park adjoins Queen Elizabeth National Park’s northern edge, forming a vital 180-kilometer wildlife corridor that allows free movement of animals (especially elephants) between the two parks. This provides the perfect primate-themed complement to Uganda’s most popular big five safari experience.
Kibale Forest National Park is renowned for its Kanyanchu Primate Walk where the exuberant chimpanzees are the most popular attraction. Several well-studied habituated communities of common chimpanzee are protected here. There are over 1,500 individuals in this ancient forest, the largest population of wild chimpanzees in Uganda and one of the most significant in Africa.
The chimps have been tracked since 1993, providing excellent chances of seeing them up-close in their natural habitat on guided walks. Spending time in the presence of these complex, intelligent beings (our closest relatives) with which we share nearly 97% of our DNA is a unique and unforgettable experience.
This incredible forest is still relatively pristine with more than 351 tree species, including brown mahoganies, figs and rare hardwood that tower above the forest floor from massive buttresses, some of which are more than 200 years old.
The surrounding countryside is dotted with picturesque crater lakes, many of which are overlooked by lodges, offering panoramic views and a variety of unique experiences.
Wildlife in Kibale National Park
While chimpanzees are the stars of Kibale National Park, there are twelve other primate species found within its verdant forest, including the black and white colobus monkeys, the Ugandan red colobus, L’hoest’s monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, mantled guereza, and olive baboons.
Other terrestrial mammals include forest elephants, buffalos, sitatungas, red and blue duikers, bushbucks, bushpigs, giant forest hogs, and common warthogs. The carnivores that are present include leopards, African golden cats, servals, different mongooses and two species of otter. Lions visit the park occasionally.
Kibale boasts over 325 species of birds, including the olive long-tailed cuckoo, western tinkerbird, the Kibale ground-thrush, two species of pittas (African and green-breasted), and the grey parrot, making it an incredible birder’s paradise.
Activities in Kibale Forest National Park
1. Chimpanzee trekking
Chimpanzee trekking is the main draw to Kibale National Park. It allows you to have a face-to-face encounter with a troop of habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat. You’ll follow experienced guides on a guided walk through the thick forest ducking under low-hanging vines and winding trails in search of these magnificent apes.
2. Chimpanzee habituation experience
Chimpanzee habituation experience offers a full-day immersion with a semi-habituated chimpanzee community. It contrasts with the standard tracking experience where you spend only one hour with these mischievous primates. This unique process is intended to make the chimps become accustomed to human presence. You will observe them up close without causing undue stress or disturbance under the guidance of researchers and expert guides.
3. Forest walks, nature walks
The 12-km-long Kibale Forest walking trail allows you to discover and appreciate the park’s incredible biodiversity, diverse habitats, and surrounding landscapes. 4. Birdwatching

Best time to visit Kibale National Park
While Kibale National Park is open any time of year, the best time to visit for chimp trekking and hiking is during the dry seasons from June through September and December to February. They are characterized by less or no rainfall, meaning the trails are dry and navigable and offer easier access to the forest, making the overall experience more enjoyable.
However, birders will find the wet seasons from March to May and September to November appealing. It is the breeding season with abundant food sources and the park experiences an influx of migratory birds though you may encounter heavy rainfall and challenging trails.
How to get to Kibale National Park
You will most likely fly into Entebbe International Airport (EBB), Uganda’s main entry point located approximately 46km/29mi from the capital, Kampala. Your local tour operator will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to Kibale National Park, depending on your safari itinerary.
The route from Kampala through Mubende to Fort Portal is the shortest and most common way to access Kibale National Park. It is approximately 309 kilometers and the drive time is 5-6 hours. From Fort Portal, a further 26 kilometers (30-45 minutes) takes you to the park’s Kanyanchu Visitor Centre.
By air, you will fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield near Kampala on a daily scheduled AeroLink flight to Kasese Airstrip. It takes about 30 minutes. A further scenic 2 hours’ drive (70km/44mi) reaches the trailhead at Kanyanchu.
