The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique opportunity that allows you to spend an extended 4 hours in the company of wild mountain gorillas that are getting accustomed to human presence in their natural habitat. To understand the experience, we need to know what gorilla habituation entails.

What is Gorilla Habituation?

Gorilla habituation is the process of gradually introducing a family of wild gorillas to human presence for conservation and tourism. It’s a specialized program that takes typically two to five years to complete.

A group of experts, including researchers, conservationists, trackers, and park rangers usually conducts the habituation process. Each gorilla family undergoes a very careful procedure, spanning about five years to gradually become accustomed to human presence.

To begin, the team of experts usually spends a little time each day at a distance that fits the gorillas’ comfort threshold. Over the years, they gradually lengthen that distance as they increase their time there. It also allows them to learn more about an individual gorilla’s behaviors, and even name them.

Finally, if they are confident that the wild gorillas are comfortable around humans, they conduct a mock exercise to verify their claims. Once all is set, the gorilla family is then opened to regular tourist visits.

How Gorilla Habituation Works

  1. Initial observation where experts observe gorillas from a safe distance of 100+ meters for months.
  2. Gradual approach: Involves gradually decreasing distance and increasing their presence while mimicking gorilla vocalizations.
  3. Trust building: Involves obtaining silverback’s acceptance by using submissive postures.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique opportunity that allows you to spend an extended 4 hours in the company of wild mountain gorillas that are getting accustomed to human presence in their natural habitat.

While gorillas are naturally shy and cautious creatures, researchers, conservationists, and trackers work with specific families daily to help them gradually feel comfortable around humans. You’ll trek with park rangers, blazing a trail through the wilder sides of the forest to observe a semi-habituated family.

Although the experience is more expensive, you are assured of significantly more time with the gorilla family instead of the regular one hour. Group size is also strictly limited to only four people instead of eight.

Visitors are only permitted to see a habituated gorilla family, while unhabituated groups are left alone. This selection is key for the safety and welfare of both humans and gorillas.

The gorilla habituation experience is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The fact that visitors spend up to four hours observing and interacting with a group of wild mountain gorillas that are in the process of becoming comfortable with humans makes the experience feel raw and more authentic compared to regular gorilla trekking.

  1. Pre-trek briefing: A morning briefing commences the gorilla habituation experience, where the expert guides will share what to expect, rules, and safety instructions when in the presence of the semi-habituated gorilla group.
  2. Trekking through the forest: The habituation team will then lead you into the forest, much earlier than the regular gorilla trekking groups. You could spend anywhere between 1 and 3 hours hiking before locating the gorillas. Although challenging, the trek or hike through Bwindi’s dense and rugged forest is rewarding. The forest features a mix of towering trees, vines, and bird calls filling the air – a breathtaking experience.
  3. Meeting the gorillas: You’ll observe how the trackers locate the trails and nests used by the gorillas the previous night, which is a significant part of the habituation process. After finding them, you’ll spend up to four hours observing them feed, play, groom one another, and even stand their ground if they feel curious about your presence!

Expect some unpredictable behavior as these are wild gorillas learning to be comfortable around humans. Meanwhile, scientists and rangers will monitor their behavior and record data, and make gorilla calls and grunts and also talk among themselves while cutting down bushes to get the gorillas used to these noises, thus contributing to the habituation process.

Gorilla habituation experience was introduced in 2015, yet relatively few people have had the honour of experiencing it. It is an incredibly humbling experience, and the habituation process is fundamental to the continued protection of the gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking vs Gorilla Habituation Experience

A key difference between regular gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation experience is that the latter allows you to visit a semi-habituated gorilla family that is not fully accustomed to human presence.

By spending up to four magical hours, the habituation experience provides a deeper connection compared to regular trekking, which allows only one hour of gorilla observation in their natural habitat. By participating, you’re essentially helping the gorillas get accustomed to human presence, which is a key step in conservation.

Where is the best place for Gorilla Habituation Experience?

The Rushaga sector in the south of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the best and only place for gorilla habituation experience. It is home to seven mountain gorilla families, the highest population density in the park.

Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s endangered mountain gorilla population, and offers thrilling gorilla trekking, one of the most incredible wildlife experiences on the continent.

Travelers wishing to take a more active role in the protection and understanding of these intelligent creatures can join the expert guides and conservationists in the habituation process of a gorilla family in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

What is the cost of a Gorilla Habituation Experience permit?

A gorilla habituation experience permit in Uganda costs USD1,500 per person for Foreign Non-Residents, USD1,000 per person for Foreign Residents and UGX 750,000 per person for East African citizens at the time of writing.

With only 4 to 8 permits available per day, we recommend booking 6 to12 months in advance to secure your spot. Group sizes are limited to a maximum of 4 trekking travelers when visiting the gorillas. This is meant to minimize stress on them.

It is possible to combine a gorilla habituation experience with the standard gorilla tracking. While the former costs USD 1,500 per person for four hours, the latter costs only USD 800 per person, where you’ll spend only one hour with the gorillas. Both offer intimate gorilla encounters in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Are mountain gorillas shy animals?

You must understand that individuals in the family that you are tracking will be shy or wary of humans if they are still in the primary stages of habituation. This implies that you might not be able to approach them as closely as you would on a regular gorilla trekking experience. Some could even hide.

As such, gorilla habituation gently introduces them to human presence. In a way, you are having a more authentic encounter with the gorillas and you might have a very intimate session with your family if they have spent much time in the habituation process.

However, some visitors might be quite disappointed if they are expecting a particularly close meeting. We therefore advise managing your expectations, and if you wind up with a family that is genuinely kind, congratulations!

The gorilla habituation experience remains a popular activity in Uganda despite the higher price attached to it. Should this be one of the activities you are interested in on a Uganda safari, we recommend booking as far in advance as possible due to limited availability.
