Uganda gorilla permit updates: Changes to be enforced effective 1st July 2026.
1. Low-Season Discount (New for 2026!)
In an exciting move, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has reintroduced discounted low-season gorilla permits in a bid to promote sustainable tourism all-year round. This is great for those planning to travel during the “green seasons” of April, May, and November.
During these months, the price of a gorilla permit drops to USD 600 for foreign non-residents and USD 500 for foreign residents. However, the permits are date-specific and cannot be rescheduled. Be sure of your dates before booking.
Why Visit During April, May, and November?
While overlooked, April, May, and November offer unique advantages for the savvy traveler.
- Fewer crowds: With fewer crowds, you have the park all to yourself, meaning you can enjoy an exclusive and more intimate gorilla trekking experience and better permit availability.
- Lush, green landscapes: These months experience heavy rainfall, transforming the forests into vibrant, misty ecosystems, offering the perfect opportunity for photography and nature lovers. Furthermore, expect shorter treks as the gorillas often descend to lower elevations to feed on fresh bamboo shoots.
- Bespoke itineraries and best price guarantee: Exploits Travel will design more flexible itineraries to match your travel preferences, helping you make the most of your Uganda safari adventure.
2. Suspension of the 7-Day Hold
As of March 1, 2026, the “soft hold” is a thing of the past. Tour operators can no longer reserve a permit for 7 days without payment. Full payment is now required immediately to secure a permit. This move is aimed at preventing “permit hoarding” and allowing only travelers with confirmed flights the opportunity for available spots.
The wildebeest migration follows a circular route from southern Serengeti in Tanzania to Masai Mara in Kenya and back again every year in a continuous, never-ending cycle.
3. Sector-Based Booking
Travelers can now book gorilla permits by sector rather than a specific gorilla family as previously. Book for one of these sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Buhoma in the North (“classic” sector) offers luxury lodges and gentler trails. It is the most directly accessed trailhead from Kampala.
Ruhija in the East offers high altitude, cooler air, and is a favorite for birdwatchers.
Rushaga in the South offers the most gorilla families and is the only place for the Habituation experience.
Nkuringo in the South offers the most dramatic views and the steepest, most athletic hikes.
