Wondering where to see the Big Five in Africa? Here are top destinations offering high-density Big 5 animal sightings.
The Big Five—elephant, rhino, Cape buffalo, lion, and leopard—are Africa’s most iconic, sought-after safari animals, originally termed as the most challenging and dangerous to hunt on foot. Today however, the term is synonymous with photographic safaris and the animals now live in protected areas across the continent.
While Africa’s Big Five live in distinct areas, seeing them free in the wild is a real treat and one of Africa’s top wildlife experiences. Talk to an African safari expert to match the right Big Five safari destination with your preferences and come face-to-face with the real icons of Africa.
Where to see the big five in Africa
The best places to see the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) in Africa include the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands Game Reserve in South Africa, the Masai Mara and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi.
Visitors have the opportunity to see these incredible and charismatic creatures on just a single trip. However, there are no guarantees when it comes to actually seeing all the members at once. Leopards, for example, are notoriously elusive, and rhino numbers are dwindling across the continent due to poaching.
Other areas offer the most dramatic sightings, including huge herds of elephants and buffalo-hunting prides of lions. Here’s a more detailed look at where to see the Big Five in Africa.
1. South Africa – Kruger National Park & Sabi Sands Game Reserve
South Africa is home to all the big five, including over 70% of Africa’s rhinos, around 3,000 lions, and the continent’s largest leopard population. Your best bet is to visit Kruger National Park, a top-tier destination for Big Five sightings spanning over 7,500 square miles and Sabi Sands Game Reserve, a stellar location for leopard sightings with one of the highest densities in the world.
Both offer excellent, reliable sightings, superior infrastructure, and a high concentration of Big Five animals. Another great place is Madikwe Game Reserve along the Botswanan border.
2. Tanzania – Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater
While Tanzania is home to all the Big Five, it is widely considered the ultimate lion country and capital of Africa. It accounts for roughly 40% to 50% of the entire continent’s remaining lion population. Key locations for spotting all five are the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. The latter offers excellent opportunities to see the Big Five in a short time, including the rare black rhino.
The vast, grassy plains of the Serengeti favour the grazing of wildebeest and zebras over elephants and rhinos. However, the sheer abundance of wildlife will more than make up for missing out on spotting a member of the Big Five. If lions are at the top of your bucket list, Serengeti’s Western Corridor is excellent for seeing big prides.
3. Botswana – Chobe National Park & Okavango Delta/Moremi Game Reserve
While rhinos are far more elusive and endangered in Botswana‘s two heavyweight safari destinations, the country boasts Africa’s largest elephant herds, massive numbers of buffalo and lion and healthy populations of leopard.
The Okavango Delta and Savute region of the Chobe National Park are fantastic wildlife areas with a focus on elephant populations, buffalo, and lions throughout the year. The Chobe River is at its elephant-packed best from August to late October.
4. Kenya – Masai Mara
Kenya is famous for the wildebeest migration, but it should not be overlooked as a major Big 5 hotspot. The Masai Mara, in particular, offers exceptional sightings of all five species, while private conservancies including Lewa and Ol Pejeta offer exclusive experiences with a strong focus on rhino conservation.
5. Namibia – Etosha National Park
Although Etosha National Park may lack the presence of buffalo (seen in the nearby Waterberg Plateau and Caprivi Strip), the abundance of elephants and lions makes it Namibia’s flagship safari destination. It is also the best place in Africa to see black rhino, particularly at waterholes.
6. Uganda – Kidepo Valley National Park & Murchison Falls National Park
In Uganda, you can see the Big Five in Kidepo Valley National Park, or by combining Queen Elizabeth National Park or Murchison Falls National Park with a trip to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
