Although Uganda is famous for mountain gorilla trekking, it is also a fantastic destination for Big Five safari adventures. However, you’ll have to visit multiple parks to see all of these iconic animals rather than going to a single reserve like Masai Mara or the Serengeti.
The Big 5 animals in Uganda are lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. These charismatic creatures are all present in the country and can be found in major parks and sanctuaries. During your adventure, you will take a personal snapshot of a lion sprawling in its natural habitat.
Key locations include Murchison Falls National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you can spot four of the Big 5 (lions, leopards, elephants, and buffaloes), excluding rhinos.
These parks also offer incredible wildlife diversity and captivating scenery; for instance, Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for its tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, Murchison Falls National Park is famous for its iconic waterfalls and Kidepo Valley is known for its rugged and pristine landscape.
Rhinos in Uganda can be spotted in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary—the primary place to track wild white rhinos on foot—but have now also been reintroduction to Kidepo Valley National Park.
Most, if not all, Uganda Big Five safari package tours combine the aforementioned parks to see four of the Big 5 with Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for rhino tracking. This combination also offers great opportunities of enjoying other safari activities.
The best and most popular time for spotting the Big Five in Uganda is during the dry season from June to August and December to February. There is little or no rainfall during these months, causing the vegetation to thin out and the animals to congregate around water holes, making them much easier to spot.
